Sustainability is at the heart of Aurora - it drives everything we do, from storytelling to production processes.
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices. We believe this is not only the right thing to do, but is essential for our industry's long-term success.
Aurora's commitment to sustainability runs deep within our core and has been a driving force since the company's establishment in 2012. As a founding Member of the Albert Sports Consortium, we strive to enhance our sustainability operations, improving existing practices and mindsets.
You can't side step sustainability, it is intrinsic to running a successful business.
In response to increasing concerns across the global community regarding Climate Change we are supercharging our sustainability credentials. Our efforts have been focused on three main pillars of action:
- Overhauling our approach to travel in the face of Production demands, including those unique to the Sports Industry. This includes creating systems to overcome limitations on working remotely, partnering with local talent and reducing our resource consumption for necessary travel.
- Placing an emphasis on Climate education and action in our editorial choices.
- Placing an emphasis on Climate education and action in our day-to-day operations. This has included creating initiatives to spread awareness and inspire change in both the professional and personal lives of our staff, as well as embedding sustainable policies with our suppliers and operational partners.
We were proud to have our work recognised in this area with our recent award win as Sustainability Champion of The Year in the Broadcast Sport Awards.
Remote productions
All our live host broadcast productions are in some shape, remote productions. For other digital and original projects such as the FIFA Creator Network, we have a network of 100 trusted creators around the world. We remotely produce and our local partners shoot the content, meaning we don’t have to fly crews around the world.
What a reduced footprint looks like on some of our projects:
Formula E
- An overall carbon footprint reduction of up to 50%
- Freight was reduced by 40%
- Overall space needed (for the broadcast team) was reduced by 35%
- Reduction of 25% fewer people on site
Extreme E
- Onsite crew of 36-40 per race, this would normally be 100+ for a job of that scale
- TV compound is powered by a green power grid, mix of solar and green hydrogen, the 3rd race this season the output was carbon positive
- 3* Albert Accredited Carbon Neutral Production
- We ByoB (Bring your own Bowls) on Extreme E, which has resulted in saving 500,000+ single use pieces
SailGP
- We use a cloud-based solution allowing us to direct the Spanish Live Broadcast from our office
FIFA World Cup Daily Show
- 32 remote creators, 1 from each nation creating content from their communities that fed into the show
Taking action
Away from production we have reconsidered our day-to-day Operations. We re-visited supplier contracts, work with sustainability experts and champion staff-led initiatives.
We partner with B-Corp, Finisterre who supply our ethically sourced work clothing. Ocean Bottle supply our reusable water bottles – to date that partnership has helped remove 2,728kg of plastic from the ocean (equivalent to 239,999 plastic bottles) and contributed to supporting 235 collectors and workers on their global projects.
To facilitate staff to adopt a sustainable approach, we understand the importance of climate education. We joined forces with Carbon Jacked, who lead all-staff training sessions and Q+As. They provide advice on waste, energy and recycling, to encouraging ideas for small events, such as a Swap Shop to celebrate Sustainable Fashion Week, and they provided much-needed insight and motivation for our staff to make their sustainability goals a reality.
There is always more work to do in this area but as an organisation that champions innovation and technology, we relish this challenge. Editorially will we continue to highlight the granular effects of climate change particularly with regards to bio-diversity and geography. We’re committed to helping bring climate awareness and action to a broader audience around the world through the power of storytelling.
